I've found the answer on another site. The song is called This Beautiful Day and it's by an Oz band called Blond Fish. You can listen to the song here:

No it wasn't a dance track. It was sung by a woman. It was mid tempo. If you've heard of imogen heap - it was quite similar to her voice but I don't think it is her. I find it hard to believe the bbc don't have a list of music played during the tournament. I can't find any details on their site but ...

I think the title of the song was actually "this beautiful day". unfortunately i have no idea who sings it.

I thought I was the only person who heard this music and loved it too! I've emailed Radio 1 and posted two message on the forum there but still no luck. If you find out what it is PLEASE let me know.
