On the 'Later' site there's a good archive, which lists artists featured on every episode. the namesa are all clickable taking you to profile pages with pictures etc. Something there might ring a bell.

I think it is a traditional piece of Indian music, I once heard John McLaughlin perform the same piece with Shakti over 20 years ago.
